Lawyers in Donald Trump’s hush money trial have sparred over evidence and witnesses as they made their closing arguments to jurors who will decide whether the Republican will be the first former American president convicted of a crime. The panel of New Yorkers could begin deliberating as early as Wednesday to decide if Trump is guilty of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments during the 2016 presidential campaign to a porn actor who claimed she had sex with him. Trump says Stormy Daniels’ story of a sexual encounter with him is a lie and that he’s innocent of the charges.

Texas congressman Tony Gonzales is out to save his job in a GOP primary runoff that has put rifts within the party on display. Gonzales' opponent is Brandon Herrera, a gun-rights YouTube creator with more than 3 million followers. Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan also faces a tough challenge that could oust him from his powerful seat and upend the Republican-controlled Legislature. Phelan angered conservatives for leading the 2023 impeachment of state Attorney General Ken Paxton. Severe storms will likely impact voting and possibly results, particularly around Dallas and Houston. Voters may struggle to get to the polls or find them closed. Dallas County extended voting by two hours.

A military fighter jet has crashed near the international airport in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Authorities say the pilot was able to escape and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. U.S. manufacturer Lockheed Martin says the aircraft was an F-35 from Fort Worth, Texas. It was headed to an Air Force base in California and crashed shortly after the pilot stopped to refuel at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. The base was leading the investigation into the crash but didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
